PARIS: Time for Spanos to give Smith the boot

Great article Jay!  Thanks!

PARIS: Time for Spanos to give Smith the boot.

If Chargers president Dean Spanos fires coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith, might he try to lure former Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher out of retirement? Associated Press file photo

What’s with those horrible Mexican ads on 1090?

I heard a few of those this morning and I had to look it up in the magic Google machine.  This is what I found… Thanks John!

MAFFEI: Mexican ads on 1090 here to stay.

By JOHN MAFFEI jmaffei@nctimes.com | Posted: Thursday, July 28, 2011 12:33 pm

Judging from the phone messages and emails, you find it just as annoying as I do.

But get used to it. The Mexican government ads on XX Sports Radio 1090 aren’t going anywhere.

The spots, which often run three in a row and as many as 10 an hour, are part of a Mexican licensing agreement, according to Tex Meyer, the new vice president and general manager at 1090.

And while the 1090 studios are in San Diego, the broadcast towers for the 77,500-watt station are in Mexico, making it a Mexican station.

As a point of education, TV and radio stations in North America are identified by their call letters. A “W” means the station is east of the Mississippi River, a “K” means it’s west of the Mississippi, a “C” means the station is in Canada, and an “X” identifies it as a Mexican station.

I understand that 1090 has to live up to its obligations with the Mexican government, and the ads are part of that obligation. What bothers me —- and apparently you, too —- are the number of spots, as well as the quality.

Some of them are professionally done and blend in well with the rest of the station’s commercials. Others are amateurish. You know the ones I mean:

  • “Oh, no, here comes the man from the rent.”
  • “Mom, here’s my savings to pay for my little brother’s doctor visit.”
  • ” ‘The Monkey’ has been caught, and the country is cutting down on the number of delinquents in the country.”

“We have to be careful with these spots,” Meyer said. “We get a standardized form from Mexico. Some of the spots are open to interpretation, and some we have to run word for word. I know well the spots that annoy our listeners, but Spanish doesn’t always translate literally into English.

“People think we get paid or compensated for the spots. We don’t. We’re not greedy broadcasters. We not the only station in the U.S. with an X in front of it, but we have to live by the rules. And these spots are part of doing business.

“Trust me, we get feedback from our listeners.”

The feedback can be seen in the ratings. The ads give listeners an excuse to change the station, seek new options.

And in any business, that’s the worst scenario.

SDUT hides latest Tim Sullivan Article on Firing AJ!

WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON IN SD?

Tim Sullivan wrote an interesting article on 11/30/11 entitled, “Spanos now must dare to be great“ in regards to hiring a new head coach and possibly a new GM.  The funny thing is…

It’s not very easy to find!  It is not in the “Sports” section…

It ain’t under Tim Sullivan’s latest articles…

It is not on the SDUT home page… or listed under “Most Popular”… probably because no one knows its written and the UT has conveniently hidden it away from its readers!

All of these photos were screen-pic’d at 10:30 AM, 12/1/11.

It’s such a shame the SDUT sucks up to the Chargers like they do!  San Diegans deserve better!

AJ Smith fired?

At 9:57AM on 12/1/11, XX1090 reported that AJ Smith has cancelled his end-of-year press briefing.  Does this mean that the Spanos family has heard San Diego in regards to terminating the volatile GM?  We can only speculate at this point, but why else would a pro-football GM cancel his end of year press conference?  It might just be that he’s afraid of getting stoned at season’s end, but this seems like the most plausible explanation.

Turner will go, but Chargers should keep GM… MY ASS!

This is ridiculous!  Nick, I love reading your column but you are way off base here.  Check out some of the many similar comments on this latest article in regards to keeping AJ and getting rid of Norv.

Things were bad here for a period of time in the 90′s and early 2000′s equivalent to the Raiders tenure of dysfunctionality, but that does not mean AJ is the best we can do.  9 people out of 10 could probably have done better in the draft than AJ has done just by picking players as they are ranked… no, I’m not kidding.

Yeah, AJ is good at finding street players.  Would he have to be if he (A) Didn’t piss off his veterans and run them out of town b/c he does not want to pay for value, (B) Didn’t miss so very fucking badly in the draft for half of a fucking decade, (C) Signed free agents(our own or on the open market), or (D) all of the above ?

This is the San Diego football version of the financial crisis.  We deregulated the market by firing Marty and putting Norv in charge.  Everyone new it was a bad idea, but somehow we got taken on this ride.  Things seemed horribly wrong, but somehow it didn’t totally collapse.  Each year there were signs of downturn and instability, but the people at the top had excuses and calmed the masses.  Finally in 2012, it was no longer too big to fail.  Injuries on top of failed drafts year after year combined with subpar coaching led to this collapse.

The Chargers are bumbling and stumbling.  I take no pride in watching my team flounder like fools.  I wanted Rex Ryan.  I wanted Polamalu, Matthews(or Maualuga or Laurinitis or Oher).  The list goes on and my fantasy defense for the bolts would be pretty awesome, but I digress.  This team is not even fun to watch.  Did Norv realize the Bolts would lose if Timmy was within 1 score?  Does he not know the bad luck our sports teams have here in San Diego?  You have to take extra precautions for “idiot kickers” here in SD!  Jiminy Christmas, I can’t believe this shit!

Anyway… thanks AJ!  And Nick, with all due respect… You are wrong sir.  Things are not good and have not been good for a while.  AND… AJ is perceived as a giant Ass Hole and San Diegans want him out of here regardless of the risk/reward potential.  On top of which I’d have to argue that there isn’t much.  His amazing 2004 and ’05 drafts don’t happen if Eli comes here.  Then where are we.  Right that’s a big IF.  How about this… he gave away a Super Bowl champion field general(Brees) and numerous players who wanted to be here.  You could even argue he cost this town a Championship.  You don’t blow up a 14-2 team and get rid of its coach!  You just don’t!

It could be argued either way at this point I guess.  And to be honest,  AJ is such a belligerent A-Hole… SD just wants him out!  With his head coach of choice in the same caravan out of town.

Bill Cowher to Chargers Rumors!

Please, for the love of everything holy… Let this be true!

Is this a face the Chargers need or what?  I feel like every Bolt fan in San Diego has had this look on their face for the past 5 years when the season came to an end.

Courtesy of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Ed Bouchette –

“Good morning,

All (good) stuff today:

Have picked up two strong, separate rumors, one on the West Coast and the other on the East Coast that Bill Cowher could be the next coach of the San Diego Chargers. It has everything he wants: A team with talent, a quality quarterback and an owner who will allow him to bring in his own management people. A bonus: His eldest daughter, now married, lives in Los Angeles. Of course, San Diego GM A.J. Smith will have to go and someone Cowher knows would take over that job. Cowher loved quarterback Philip Rivers before the 2004 draft and there the Steelers might have drafted him instead of Ben Roethlisberer if he were not picked before them.”
