Did You Know Vincent Jackson is Smart?

Posted in Chargers, Other SoCal Sports, Pop Culture on January 23, 2010 by sandiegosportswire

Before Vincent Jackson’s pre-playoff detainment, I read this article on ESPN about how smart Vincent Jackson is… er WAS!  I must admit that I was surprised given the fact he’s gotten two DUI’s since he’s been here.  Smart people don’t usually get two DUI’s!  If you have two DUI’s and think you’re smart, don’t rethink it b/c your brain is obviously not working properly.

“QUOTE – Jackson was a second-round pick of the Chargers in 2005, beating the odds for someone who did not attract many FBS scholarship offers. As a youth, Jackson seemed to win as many accolades for his brains as he did for his brawn.

He’s the only child of Terrence and Sherry Jackson. They were a nomadic military family. Described by his mom as a “math geek,” Jackson has a creative edge: He once won a national poetry contest in Germany.

In 1993, the family moved outside of Colorado Springs, Colo. Jackson played football at Widefield High, where he earned a 4.3 GPA and graduated fourth in his class of almost 400. Widefield primarily ran the ball; as a result, no major schools recruited Jackson for football. He was interested in Columbia University and the Colorado School of Mines, mostly for academic reasons, before the University of Northern Colorado began recruiting him.

Alcorn State head football coach Earnest Collins was the special-teams coach at Northern Colorado at the time.

“His high school coach kept telling me, ‘I have this young man who is the Randy Moss of Colorado Springs,’” Collins says. “I watched his highlight tape and said, ‘Holy cow! Why isn’t anyone else recruiting this kid?’”

Collins attended one of Jackson’s basketball games and was sold. Jackson accepted a part-academic, part-athletic scholarship to Northern Colorado, located in Greeley, Colo.

“I was thinking I’m here for school first,” Jackson says. “You hear so much as a kid that it’s one in a million making the NFL, and it’s what people should tell kids. But when it’s pounded in your head, it’s tough to think, ‘I’m going to have a pro future.” – UNQUOTE”

I don’t think we should get rid of VJAX, but the Chargers should get him a handler to keep him in check and drive him around since he obviously can’t take care of himself responsibly.  Who has two DUI’s and drives with expired tags and blaring music loud enough to attract attention to those expired tags.  I’m no criminal master-mind, but if you are rolling illegally or doing something illegal, DON’T ATTRACT ATTENTION TO YOURSELF FOOL!

Kevin Acee is Full of Crap!

QUOTE “Chargers’ night out not cause of off day

Fans’ anger, Internet, radio fueling nonstory

By Kevin Acee, UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

Friday, January 22, 2010 at 12:01 a.m.

SAN DIEGO – This has gotten out of hand, and so I am writing about it.

I can hardly believe this has become the issue it has.

There may well be some leadership and accountability voids on the Chargers. But those voids have to do with facing up to a few guys playing dumb and a few playing soft.

That void may well also have to do with occasional off-the-field misconduct or irresponsibility.

But this? This is a nonstory that has gotten feet because of the Internet, talk radio and fans who are angry about an inexplicable loss.”  UNQUOTE  Read Entire Crap Article

This story was written in the wake of the Chargers’ inexplicable loss to the JETS last Sunday after reports surfaced that multiple Chargers were at Pure Platinum until the wee hours of Saturday morning before Sunday’s playoff game.  They downed multiple bottles of Grey Goose and had a great time.  Good for them, bad for SD and the rest of the Chargers!

The Chargers played like SHIT against the JETS and all of San Diego is sickened by the way they played… this “non-story” is actually a HUGE story because it is a microcosm of the Chargers’ failures over the past few years.  It is an utter lack of discipline and maturity.  Kevin Acee has lost all of his credibility with this article if he had any to begin with in this town.  He is known as the Chargers/AJ Smith apologist and has gone way to far out on this limb.  Sorry Kevin, but you are way off base on this!

I wish I were surprised.

Unfortunately I am not.  Let’s be honest… as soon as Kaeding missed that first field goal, all of SD knew the game was over in the JETS favor.  If you didn’t, you’re not from SD and I envy you.  We are the fifth losingest city of all time and it gives me no joy to write that.  It just pisses me off that we are HORRIBLE coming out of byes in the playoffs and that we continually beat ourselves.  The JETS had no business winning tonight but our All-Pro kicker missed two gimmes.  I hate to say it, but this kid is done in San Diego and if he doesn’t get cut by the Chargers, I will be surprised.  Accurate during the regular season means shit, this guy does not hit clutch shots… EVER!  The kick against Cinci was big but not really that important.  It’s just a shame because he tries hard and is pretty good as far as kickers go.  I just don’t see anyone bouncing back from the HUGE misses he has racked up for the Chargers!

Keys to our defeat:

1.  2 Missed Field Goals

2. That stupid fucking headbutt!  ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!????

3. Kicking the Challenge Flag?!  What the hell are you guys thinking?

I really thought all of this was behind us.   I couldn’t help but laugh in disgust throughout the game as the Chargers imploded.  What a total and utter collapse!  I hope next year Norv doesn’t allow the Chargers to hear or read any press during the playoffs.  That was just a complete meltdown and the atmosphere was too big for the Chargers once again.

No offense NY, but The JETS are ONE and DONE!

Posted in Chargers, Pop Culture on January 13, 2010 by sandiegosportswire

I’m hearing a lot of talk coming from the East Coast and “sports experts” about the J E T S – JETS.  It’s just annoying at this point.  The Chargers have won 11 straight and have more offensive weapons than every team in the NFL…. Yes, even more than New Orleans and they beat the JETS 24-10 with their foot off the gas in the 4th quarter.  To be perfectly honest, I like Rex Ryan and the JETS… just not this week.  Regardless of the fact that they will not be able to cover all of our guys on offense or run the ball against Blue Thunder, this is the Divisional Round of the playoffs and our Chargers are battle tested and seasoned.  Say what you want, but the playoffs are different and the pressure goes up a notch every round.  I think the Chargers are ready to take advantage of that experience this year.  Hence the ONE AND DONE!

The Chargers have gotten 0 respect all season long.  Even when LT passed Jim Brown’s career rushing mark against the Browns, the National Media only gave LT a 2 second scoring clip… with 0 coverage of the game other than the box score.  It doesn’t surprise me at all during the regular season, but San Diego finished 13-3 with the only active double digit win streak and now all we’re hearing about is the JETS.  ARE YOU FUCKING JOKING!!??  The Bengals are horrible and the JETS would not even be in the tournament if the Colts or Bengals took their games against them seriously… The Bengals are probably regretting their half-assed game week 17.  I digress… I was congratulating the JETS for beating an average team in the first round of the playoffs.  Nicely done NY… err NJ!  The East Coast controls the main stream media and we out here on the west coast have to listen to them dribble over themselves anytime they have a somewhat decent team.  I am pretty sure the Eagles and Giants were the favorites to go to the Super Bowl this year according to most pundits.  The entire NFC LEast was the division to beat.  I realize the JETS are not in the NFC LEast, but they get the benefit of the same crappy bias that pollutes American sports coverage.  Did I mention we swept the NFC LEast?… even the Cowboys, which is the new “hottest” team in the NFC.  I swear, these pundits need to grow a pair and stop flip flopping every week.  Anyway, here’s to a national wake-up call on Sunday at 1:40PM!  Enjoy your shit burger NY!  ONE AND DONE!

Manning’s 4th MVP is Good for The Bolts!

The '08 MVP after his 2nd consecutive playoff loss to the Bolts

I like Peyton Manning and love the way he plays the game, but we all know he did not deserve the ‘09 MVP… especially since he started off ‘09 by losing to P-Riv and the Bolts.  That being said, this is good for San Diego and the Chargers considering this is one part of the playoff formula.  Assuming the Colts win their first game in the playoffs, which might not happen considering they just absolutely suck in the post-season, we will get the opportunity to showcase the REAL MVP on prime time and bounce Indy and their annoying fans once again.  It will be great and everyone will write about how Manning cannot be considered for this award anymore until he gets past his new nemesis… aka the team that shall not be named on national television… aka YOUR SAN DIEGO SUPER CHARGERS!

Chargers Playoff Tickets Available… On Craig’s List

Posted in Uncategorized on January 8, 2010 by sandiegosportswire

“• The Chargers announced their divisional round playoff game has sold out. Tickets were available only to current season-ticket holders and those purchasing 2010 season tickets. The team said it has a limited number of playoff tickets remaining for those who purchase ’10 season tickets.” – Courtesy of the UT

If you want Chargers Playoffs tickets, you don’t have to buy 2010 Season Tickets, you just have to go to Craig’s List and overpay for some other season ticket holder’s tickets.  The Chargers sold up to 8 playoff tickets per Season Ticket Holder, which leaves no tickets for the Average Joe at face value left to buy from the ticket office directly.

I love the Chargers, but this policy is FUCKED!

A New Stadium For SD? Not so fast!

Posted in Chargers, Other SoCal Sports, Padres, Pop Culture with tags , , , , , on December 23, 2009 by sandiegosportswire

What’s up fellow Chargers fans?!  With the Chargers ranked third in the NFL, 2nd in the AFC, and the best season in a couple years, we are undoubtedly going to face the “New Stadium” debate very soon.  While I absolutely want a new football stadium in America’s finest city, I must say that I am vehemently opposed to spending local tax dollars on the project.  I have pasted some excerpts from a 35pg study on the subject to give you an idea of why and linked you to a summary of the analysis.  From what I have found, this is consistent with reality as opposed to what the Chargers’ front man Mark Fabiani has been trying to sell SD.  I respect Fabiani and the chargers very much, but private companies need to pay for their own house just like the rest of us… unless they want to cut us in on a bigger piece of the pie such as ownership.

Unfortunately there is a Mt. Everest size pile of data on the subject and NONE of it is in favor of the local taxpayers.  In summary, it ends with us footing the bill for increased city services, higher ticket prices(You didn’t seriously think your season or individual tickets would cost less did you?), and “In general, the results of this study do not support a positive correlation between professional sports and job creation” (112).

There now exists almost twenty years of research on the economic impact of professional sports franchises and facilities on the local economy.  The results in this literature are strikingly consistent.  No matter what cities or geographical areas are examined, no matter what estimators are used, no matter what model specifications are used, and no matter what variables are used, articles published in peer-reviewed economics journals contain almost no evidence that professional sports franchises and facilities have a measurable economic impact on the economy.

Calls for subsidies at the local level come from interest groups and their consulting firms—which we call “promoters” of subsidization—who talk up local benefits of sports franchises, stadiums, and mega-events. As we shall see, promoters’ claims of such local benefits don’t hold up empirically. But such rationales can also be countered by simple economic intuition.  The prospect of a game being broadcast nationally or even internationally from the stadium or arena is touted as a wonderful advertisement of the city’s virtues. These benefits, which the teams cannot capture, are used to justify  a local government subsidy for the construction of the facility.

THANKS TO – Dennis Coates (Professor of Economics at University of Maryland, Baltimore County and President-Elect of the North American Association of Sports Economists) provides a nice survey of the academic literature on the economic impact of sports stadiums in The American.

REITERATION:  I ABSOLUTELY WANT A NEW STADIUM!  I LOVE THE CHARGERS AND SPORTS!

PS:  On the same topic, SD spent $458,000,000 for the Padres franchise that promised to spend money on a “competitive team”.  Four years after we forked over the dough, the franchise slashed its payroll and John Moores sold his team for more than $500,000,000 after purchasing it for $84 million in 1994.  This will yield him over a 500% return on investment.

If the Chargers want to cut the taxpayers in on the ROI, then you have my vote!

Go Flex Yourself NFL!

Posted in Chargers, Pop Culture with tags , , , , on December 19, 2009 by sandiegosportswire

What’s up Chargers fans?!  I hope you’re having a glorious day.  I’m super pumped for this battle between the 10-3 Chargers and the 9-4 Bengals, but I am a little confused as to why this game was not flexed to Sunday night.  We are literally talking about two of the best teams in the NFL going head to head in a game with serious playoff implications.  This game could potentially decide which of these two teams will have home field advantage and a bye in the playoffs.  As far as regular season games go, they don’t get much more important than this.  In case you’re wondering how the NFL determines “flexibility”, I found their guidelines on the NFL website and for the life of me cannot figure out why they are airing a 5-8 Carolina Panthers team vs. an 11-2 Vikings team that will probably bench most of their starters by half time if the game is in hand.  To make matters worse, the Panthers’ starting QB is an undrafted 2nd year player who is starting in place of Jake Delhomme because he has a broken finger.  REALLY NFL?  REALLY?  You’re making us watch that piece of crap instead of honoring your own guidelines(below)?

The NFL obviously does not like San Diego because we are a “small media market”.  Suck it NFL!  SD is one of the best this year and you’re going to have to deal with us in prime-time eventually.  I guess its up to the Chargers to win the whole fuckin’ thing so we can give the NFL and the networks a big fucking shit-burger to eat.

So enjoy the sunny afternoon match-up which is THE game of the week because the night game is a piece of shit!

ARE YOU JOKING???  Brett Favre is great and all, but C’MON MAN!

Flexible Scheduling

Allows teams to play their way onto the Sunday night schedule

Last season, the NFL implemented for the first time in its history a primetime “flexible scheduling” element on Sundays in Weeks 10-15 and in Week 17.

Flexible scheduling ensured quality matchups on Sunday night in those weeks and gave surprise teams a chance to play their way onto primetime.

The 2007 NFL schedule will again utilize flexible scheduling in Weeks 11-17. The NBC Sunday night time slot for “flex” weeks will list the game tentatively scheduled for Sunday night.

Only Sunday afternoon games are eligible to be moved to Sunday night, in which case the tentatively scheduled Sunday night game will be moved to an afternoon start time. Flexible scheduling will not be applied to games airing on Thursday, Saturday or Monday nights.

Just as the six major college football conferences have done for many years, the NFL will have the flexibility to move the start times of games on Sundays, using a 12-day notice format.

For example, a game scheduled for a Sunday could move from a 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff to an 8:15 p.m. start, but the change would be made and announced no later than the prior Tuesday, 12 days prior.

The NFL has commonly moved games between 1:00 p.m. ET and 4:15 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoons, and the NFL now employs flexible scheduling to include one of its primetime packages of games – on Sunday evenings.

Sunday afternoon games, as in the past, can still be moved between 1:00 and 4:05 or 4:15 p.m. ET.

In Week 17, in order to ensure a Sunday night game with playoff implications, the decision to move the start time may be made on six days notice.

NFL Flexible Scheduling 101

  • Begins Sunday of Week 11
  • In effect during Weeks 11-17
  • Only Sunday afternoon games are subject to being moved into the Sunday night window.
  • The game that has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday night during flex weeks will be listed at 8:15 p.m. ET.
  • The majority of games on Sundays will be listed at 1:00 p.m. ET during flex weeks except for games played in Pacific or Mountain Time zones which will be listed at 4:05 or 4:15 p.m. ET.
  • No impact on Thursday, Saturday or Monday night games.
  • The NFL will decide (after consultation with CBS, FOX, NBC) and announce as early as possible the game being played at 8:15 p.m. ET. The announcement will come no later than 12 days prior to the game. The NFL may also announce games moving to 4:05 p.m. ET and 4:15 p.m. ET.
  • Week 17 start time changes could be decided on 6 days notice to ensure a game with playoff implications.
  • The NBC Sunday night time slot in “flex” weeks will list the game that has been tentatively scheduled for Sunday night.
  • Fans and ticket holders must be aware that NFL games in flex weeks are subject to change 12 days in advance (6 days in Week 17) and should plan accordingly.
  • NFL schedules all games.
  • Teams will be informed as soon as they are no longer under consideration or eligible for a move to Sunday night.

Phil Simms weighed in on the Chargers during Scott & BR today

Listen to the Audio from Scott & BR on XX1090

If you’re not familiar with Scott & BR, they are on XX1090 from 5AM-9AM.  They’re fun to listen to but they also have great connections and get really interesting interviews on a regular basis from people like Jim Nance, Phil Simms, and Mark Schlereth.  They own a horse with Drew Brees and he’s on quite a bit because they are friends and are all part of the ownership group, “Great Friends”.  Anyways, this is a sweet interview from a national voice giving the Chargers their due and tempering his expectations because he realizes there are several tough games coming  up.  Cincinnati and Tennessee… both have two n’s back to back and we’re playing them back to back.  Weird.
